Stupid old man!
An encounter at the wine store.
You should know, dear reader, that my back hurts. Often. It comes and goes. I’m also forgetful and believe me, it’s gotten a lot worse since my stroke two months ago. I now walk with a cane whenever possible.
A couple of days ago after discovering I had run out of both beer and wine, I rushed to a nearby TOTAL WINE store, a large and very good, probably local, chain with several stores here in the area. Going without booze for even one day is not an option for me.
All bend over and a little shaky without my cane, the perfect picture of a stupid old man, I finally found an employee who would help me, as the customer service desk was unmanned. “Ordering?”, the arrogant fellow asked. “Ordering you do from the factory; you want me to get you some wine?”. “Yes, I said, A case of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay and 24 cans of Heineken beer, please”. “OK, come along”, he said, “let’s go get them”. “No”, I said, “could You please get that for me” and off he went, I thought rather grudgingly.
When he showed up with the merchandise at the cash register, I noticed that instead of the Heinekens he had brought some other lookalike brand. When I pointed that out, he said “Oh,” and quickly went back to correct the mistake only to report ten minutes later empty handed”, “Heineken beer only comes in packs of 12.” he said looking exasperated. “We don’t have cases of 24 cans. I looked all over for you.” Well, “why don’t you get me two cases of 12 cans then!” I said, adding stupid under my breath. And off he went in a huff, but not without a dirty look.
I’m aware I must have come across as, well, yes, a stupid old man, all bend over and a bit in pain, stumbling a little over my words as I became impatient with the arrogant schmuck.
Next time I’ll be certain to bring my cane for balance and to hit the sonofabitch over the head with. Bah humbug!
“By the way, Tom,” you ask, “Did someone offer assistance dragging that big box of 12 bottles of wine and those 24 cans of beer to your car? “ Nah .

Getting the right stuff every time is a everyday struggle. But if you go there more often you don’t have to be serviced and you put the right stuff in your wagon. If he is not bringing it up to your car it’s better to have the stuff in the wagon. Don’t you think!
Well…how clear were you? Hello, I need help shopping. Is there someone who can do that for me? Sorry dad, no sympathy. Without being clear it looks kind of snotty to the worker. They get low wages and a smile goes a long way
